MDC trio denied bail
THREE MDC officials Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova were denied bail when they appeared at the Magistrates Courts in Harare today.
The trio has been remanded to June 26, notified the State of their intention to challenge their placement on remand on the next court date.
Magistrate Bianca Makwande denied them freedom after the State argued that the trio was facing very serious charges and could abscond since they were likely to be given a custodial sentence if convicted.
The accused persons are being charged for faking abduction last month.
Makwande said the three were facing very serious charges and were likely to be given custodial sentences if convicted, which may force them to abscond or commit a similar offence.
“The court’s is of the view that the State’s opposition of bail in the respect of propensity to commit a similar offence is acceptable and if proved the video evidence that the three were free citizens at a time they were alleging to have been abducted it may force them to skip bail.
Therefore, the court will place confidence in the officers of the State”.
The State prosecutor Charles Muchemwa alleged that the three activists caused media headlines on May 15, 2020 by faking abduction in an attempt to tarnish the image of the government after staging a demonstration in Warren Park suburb.
It is the State’s case that trio were captured on CCTV at Belgravia Shopping Centre in Harare at a time they were alleging to have been in custody of suspected State agents at an unknown place and that there are witnesses who saw the three driving in Mamombe’s car in Harare at a time they were alleging to have been captured.
