NORTON Member of Parliament Temba Mliswa has lauded efforts by a piggery farmer in his constituency, who is empowering fellow women in the agricultural sector.
The farmer, Letwinner Nyagano, who is a member of Women in Agriculture Union (WAU), said her passion was to capacitate other female farmers through pig-rearing training programmes.
“I lobby for women empowerment especially with trainings and we held a piggery training at my plot in Norton in September last year and 71 women spread across the country attended.
“I trained them on servicing the sows, weaning the piglets and preparing their own feed,” she said.
Nyagano, who is a beneficiary of the President’s Piggery initiative, said her journey began long back with a few equipment and only three serviced sows and now the piggery project has grown.
“I now have a sow unit of 28 and I am hoping to increase it to 50 by August, also I have booked to have the breed which was imported by ZAGP from SA.”
“I prepare my own feed and I managed to buy a grinding mill from the piggery proceeds, I have started to pass on the piglets to fellow women farmers in order to empower them,” she said.
Besides training women on how to keep pigs she has also trained 50 women on how to plant sweet potatoes in Norton.
The training was conducted by WAU.
