THE recent mayor of Chitungwiza, Lovemore Maiko has expressed his concern over the council’s budget and appealed to councillors and residents to reject the unrealistic rate hike.

This is according to a statement circulating on social media that Maiko confirmed to Dungwiza News was his.

He said there was a public outcry from residents and businesses over the high rates.

“At law they still have 30 days to review downwards their budget and I also urge residents to visit local municipal offices and inspect the budget
As stakeholders residents have a right in terms of the law to object to any increase within the 30 days period, he advised.

Maiko added that due to the prevailing economic hardships residents will be overburdened by the rate hike.

He also queried the logic behind Chitungwiza’s decision to charge rates higher than the country’s capital city, Harare.

“According to Harare City budget, residents in high-density suburbs are to fork our equivalent of US$23 a figure in stark contrast with Chitungwiza’s US$23 fee for high-density areas.”

He added that Harare City Council did not increase rates in last week’s budget announcement.
