AMID mounting pressure that it lacked the political will to act on recent allegations of corruption, gold smuggling, and money laundering serialized in a documentary by Al Jazeera, the government yesterday issued a strong warning to presidential envoy and ambassador at Large for Europe and Americas, Prophet Uebert Angel, Simon Rudland, Henrietta Rushwaya, and Ewan MacMillan that they may face prosecution.
According to a press statement issued by Information minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, government was seized with the matter and will keep the nation appraised of any new developments.
“Government takes the allegations raised in the documentary seriously and has directed relevant organs to institute investigations into the issues raised therein. Any persons found to have engaged in acts of corruption, fraud or any form of crime will face the full wrath of the law.’’
In the statement, government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding local and international laws including laws relating to financial transactions, and the trade of gold, and other precious minerals.
“Boastful behaviour and name-dropping by some personalities featured in the documentary should never be taken as an enunciation of government policy.”
Zimbabweans have expressed their anger over the contents in the series chronicling how a criminal syndicate alleged to be linked to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was allegedly laundering money and smuggling gold out of the country.
Uebert Angel, boasted to undercover journalists that he was able to use his diplomatic status to launder millions of US dollars through a gold-smuggling scheme.
Meanwhile, a new political party, E-Movement is organising a demonstration in Johannesburg, South Africa next week.
“E Movement condemns the appointment of Uebert Engel without thorough consultations.” E-Movement leader Anadi Sululu told Zim Community News.
Sululu is a former opposition Member of Parliament for Silobela.
